The Wizard

The wizard waits
In his purple pajamas
For the sun to rise
The stars fade back into the black of his hat
By the fireside
From the corner of the sky
The pinks and blues are drawn across
The insurance adjuster
Adjusts his glasses
And declares a total loss
Hard times, hard times
For the feeling man
Working in a world not meant for him
Cornered anywhere he stands
Hard times, hard times
For the softer soul
Always shown the colder shoulder
The only shoulder warmer’d
Be his own
And who should shoulder that alone?
In the fog and the crowd
Around the track at Montefiore
As the bugs go by
The widow sneaks through the mist, to The peaks
Of her powder, dry
Who’d imagine she’d have us chased us
Half as well or half as far
The old debt collector
Collects what’s left
Of her and leaves, late for the stars
Hard times, hard times
For the feeling man
Working in a world not meant for him
Cornered anywhere he stands
Hard times, hard times
For the softer soul
Always shown the colder shoulder
The only shoulder warmer’d
Be his own
And who should shoulder that alone?

There Are People
06:12
|
|||
There are people in this world
Would love nothing more than to see you cry
They don’t know you and they don’t want to know
That’s just the way it is
I don’t know why
You go out dancing till your knees explode
Red confetti falling on your toes
Threaded through the sheets of frozen rain
Lightning strung together, hanging,
On a chain
And you out there in heels, with a kite
But I’d like to see my first fair fight tonight
Time will turn us into gold
Braid the muscle and bloom in the bone
Children sleeping on the beach at dawn
But they’re not children now,
They’re almost grown
A silver needle, long enough to go
Through every ear to ear from here to Tokyo
The distant lights on where we used to live
The memory failing, I can fell it give
I might recoil in horror at the sight
But I’d like to see my first fair fight tonight
If I ever found you in the weeds unconscious
I’d weep and my tears would bring you back to life
You saw the snipers scrape the rooftops, dear
From the car that carved its way in here
Our work briefly in the underground
You won’t hear us spreading that around
You go back begging to your younger days
They sigh when they see you, glad you’d moved away
The what and where and why and who knows how
They’ve all forgotten you, forget them now
If you’re going to take my head off
Do it right
I’d like to see my first fair fight tonight
Whatever hangs before me, sure, I’ll bite
But I’d like to see my first fair fight
